HISTORY

The Great TTC Knitalong is a yarn-filled annual charity event that brings together knitting and crochet fans from across the GTA and beyond! Proceeds from the event go to Sistering: A Woman’s Place, a multi-service centre for homeless, at-risk and socially isolated women in Toronto.

Each year, groups of excited crafters spend a Saturday shopping across Toronto, making new friends and boldly knitting in public. Travelling via TTC, the Knitalong teams create city wide visibility for their craft, while raising awareness for a wonderful charity. Participants pay a small donation to join and in return they receive great discounts and generously donated swag from local shops, designers, yarn companies, and knitting websites. At day’s end all team members gather at a downtown pub for story swapping and prize draws.

The first Knitalong was organized by Vivienne Suen and Beryl Tsang. They ran four great events between October 2005 and June 2007. In 2009, the event was resurrected by a group of committed volunteers lead by Michelle Hotchin and Joyce Poon.  It was then that the charitable element was added. Since then, six more fantastic Knitalongs have taken place and over $6500 has been raised for Sistering.

The torch has now been handed off to another group of dedicated volunteers led by Bobbi Jo Quigley. We are very excited to be able to return this popular event to all the avid knitters in our community.
